History and Biography of Susanna Tyson

Susanna Tyson, the ninth and youngest child of Henry Tyson and his wife Sarah, was born on September 1, 1787 in York County, PA.  There are no baptismal records for her, but this date of birth is taken from her tombstone.  On May 8, 1808, at Trinity Reformed Church in York, PA, she married Peter Dietz.  Based on census records, they lived in what is now the far eastern section of Hellam Borough, in a beautiful stone home along South Wilson Lane just to the east of a small tributary to Kreutz Creek.

According to the History of York County, Pennsylvania, Volume II by George Prowell in 1907 the stone house was built in 1811.  It also states that Peter operated a distillery on the property for 17 years and also held many township offices.  This biography is also where the story of Sarah Tyson, Henry Tyson’s wife, being from Lititz, Lancaster County comes from.  However, these biographical histories are many times inaccurate in the stories they portray, evidenced by the fact that this biography also said Henry Tyson was a State Senator (when he was really a State Representative) and that he was paid for his legislative services in Harrisburg (but when he was a State Representative the state Capitol was Philadelphia, not Harrisburg).

According to Peter’s will and the biography of his son Elias Dietz in the History of York County, Pennsylvania, Volume II by George Prowell in 1907 confirms that Peter and Susanna had 9 children.  The names of the children, in order from oldest to youngest, is Henry, Joseph, Peter, Sarah, Daniel, John, Susanna, Elias and Jacob.

Joseph Dietz born October 28, 1810 in York County, PA, died March 5, 1895 in York County, PA and buried at Dietz Cemetery in Hellam Twp, York County, PA.  He married Elizabeth Strickler born January 23, 1820 in York County, PA, died April 13, 1858 in York County, PA and buried at Dietz Cemetery in Hellam Twp, York County, PA
3.
