5. Rachel Tyson (1778-1855)

History and Biography of Rachel Tyson

Rachel Tyson, the seventh child of Henry Tyson and his wife Sarah, was born on February 13, 1778 in York County, PA.  There are no baptismal records for her, but this date of birth is taken from her tombstone.  On May 18, 1807, at Trinity Reformed Church in York, PA, she married Henry Reichard.  Based on census records, they lived in Spring Garden Township, probably somewhere in the vicinity of Longstown or the present development known as Haines Acres.

According to census records, it appears likely that Rachel and Henry were the parents of 7 children, as the 1820 census indicated 3 females under the age of 10, 1 female between 10 and 15, 2 males under 10 and 1 male between 10 and 15.  Henry’s estate papers from when he died in 1832 only indicate one son being alive, so either 2 of the males in the 1820 census were not their children or they passed away before Henry did in 1832.

Henry’s estate records list William as his only and oldest son.  William was born around 1809 married Elizabeth Wackerman.  Estate records also list his oldest daughters as Hannah (or also listed as Anna) and Sarah.  Hannah is found in the 1850 census living with her mother in Windsor Twp, York County and appears to be single at the age of 46.  Sarah is found in the 1850 and 1860 census living with her aunt Susan (Tyson) Dietz and uncle Peter Dietz and also appears to be single.  The 1850 census lists her age as 27, but that can’t be correct as her father’s estate file said that in 1835 Sarah was “full age”, which I believe means she was at least 21 years of age, which puts her birth date around 1813.

Rachel and Henry’s two youngest daughters were named Rebecca and Anna Mary, and were considered minors over the age of 14 in 1835 according Henry’s estate papers.  Rebecca, just like her two older sisters, appears to be single as she is found in the 1860 census living with her oldest sister Hannah in Windsor Twp, York County.  That census lists her age as 45, but her tombstone shows she was born in 1818.  For Anna Mary, I have not been able to find record of her, so it is not clear if she passed away after his estate record closed or if she married and possibly moved out of the area.
