3. Benjamin Tyson (1814-1883)

History and Biography of Benjamin Tyson & Christina Flinchbaugh

Benjamin Tyson is the tenth child of Jacob Tyson and Elizabeth Lehman.  According to his tombstone, he was born August 20, 1814 in Windsor Twp, York County, PA.  On February 16, 1836, the York Gazette had the announcement that Benjamin Tyson married Miss Christianna Flinchbaugh were married by the Rev. Oswald.  According to the History of York County, Pennsylvania by John Gibson in 1886, Rev. Oswald was assistant pastor at Christ Lutheran Church in York from 1829-1836, making it likely that is where they were married.  Christina is the daughter of Frederick Flinchbaugh and Christina Pfister and according to her tombstone was born April 11, 1808 in York County, PA.

Benjamin’s father Jacob passed away in 1822, just a couple of weeks before Benjamin turned 8 years old.  Even though Jacob died when his oldest son John was only 23 years old and Elizabeth did not re-marry after Jacob’s death, the family was still able to keep his land in the family.  In the 1830 census, Elizabeth Lehman is living alone, with John and his young family living right next door.  Benjamin was likely living in his older brother John’s household, as the 1830 census counts a male age 15-19 in the household, which fits the age of Benjamin but is too old for any of John’s children.  It appears that by 1840 Benjamin had taken possession of all the Tyson land, not his older brother John.  In 1840, John and his family are living in Spring Garden Twp, while Benjamin is living in Windsor Twp.  The 1840 census for Benjamin has a female aged 60-69, which is likely his mother Elizabeth since she was age 65 and she is also listed as living with him in the 1850 census.

Due to a lack of recorded deed transactions for this property, it is unclear when Jacob purchased it.  It appears he purchased it sometime between 1800 and 1810.  The 1800 census places him as neighbors to his father Henry and brother Isaac, who lived in the northern part of Windsor Twp near the intersection of Fresyville Rd and East Prospect Rd.  The 1810 and 1820 census place him as neighbors of people who lived in the area of his land, which is basically to the east of Felton Rd, near the intersection with Brownton Rd.  As of this writing (September 2017), much of this same land is still owned by a great-grandson of Benjamin Tyson and Christina Flinchbaugh, meaning the land has been in the Tyson family for over 200 plus years.

Benjamin took an active role in his community, much like his grandfather Henry did.  When Lebanon Lutheran Church, which was founded upon land donated by his father-in-law Frederick Flinchbaugh, built a new church building in 1859, Benjamin Tyson was one of the Lutheran trustees of the Union church.  In addition, Benjamin was also elected as one of the directors for the Peach Bottom Railway Company on August 3, 1870 for the York County line.  The Peach Bottom Railway was built from York to Peach Bottom, and ran along part of the northeast edge of Benjamin’s property.  Also, the Brownton station of the railroad was only about 1/2 mile down the road from his house.  Later on, the Peach Bottom Railway became known as the Ma & Pa Railroad.

Christina meanwhile, was a skilled seamstress.  One of the quilts she made is featured on the cover of the book Antique Quilting Designs, by Roberta Denvin, 2001.  The piece is called a Pieced Double Irish Chain Quilt.  The story passed down in the family is that Christina made the quilt, and the research in the book by the author suggests the colored prints used in the quilt date it to the mid-1830’s, which coincides with Christina and Benjamin getting married in 1836.

Like the Miller family, the Tyson’s have a school named after them as well.  It is unclear how early the school was built, but it was built by 1860 as it shows up on maps of that date.  The Tyson’s donated land near their farm for the school, as it is located on the west side of Felton Rd, where Brownton Rd merges into Felton Rd.  The school is still standing today, but it has now been converted into a private residence.
