History and Biography of Jacob Tyson & Elizabeth Lehman
Jacob Tyson, the third son of Henry Tyson and his wife Sarah, was born on March 24, 1770 in York County, PA. Sometime around the mid 1790’s, he married Elizabeth Lehman, daughter of Frederick Lehman and Anna Habaker. She was born on September 13, 1775 in Lancaster County, and moved to York County with her parents sometime in the early 1790’s. The 1790 census still places them in Warwick Twp, Lancaster County, but the 1793 Septennial Census place Frederick and his family in Windsor Twp, York County, PA.
The 1800 census indicates that Jacob and his young family lived near his father and older brother Isaac in the northern section of Windsor Twp. at that time. As mentioned on his father’s page, Henry lived on what is now Freysville Rd, just south of where it intersects with East Prospect Rd and along Kreutz Creek. However, the neighbors listed next to him on the 1810 census indicates that by then he moved to the southern portion of Windsor Twp where he would reside until he passed away. Jacob’s property is north of the current borough of Felton, being just to the east of Felton Road where it intersects with Brownton Road. Most of the property was north of Brownton Road, with some being on the southern side of it. For the most part, this entire property is still in the hands of one of Jacob Tyson’s descendants, more than 200 years since he first purchased it.
Jacob and Elizabeth were the parents of at least 11 children. In order from oldest to youngest they are Elizabeth, Nancy, John, Sarah, Rebecca, Priscilla, Lydia, Jacob, Charles, Benjamin, David. The list of their children has been developed from numerous sources.
Charles and David are the least known of their children, and this is because they did not live to reach adulthood and are not mentioned in any estate papers. In fact, it is only strong circumstantial evidence that points to them being the children of Jacob and Elizabeth. Charles and David passed away less then 10 days apart, with Charles passing away on August 8, 1822 and David passing away on July 31, 1822. They are both buried in Lebanon Lutheran Church Cemetery in North Hopewell Twp., York County. In fact, they are buried directly on either side of their father Jacob Tyson, who passed away on August 4, 1822. The fact that the three of them passed away within a 9 day time span strongly suggests that some type of deadly disease swept through the household in the summer of 1822.
The other 4 young children are mentioned in the Orphans Court records for Jacob after he passed away. It states guardians were appointed for Jacob and Benjamin, who were under the age of 14, and also Lydia and Priscilla, who were over the age of 14. Jacob Tyson appears to have married Elizabeth Sechrist and moved to Logan Mills, Clinton County, PA. There is a recorded deed at the York County Archives between all the children of Jacob & Elizabeth Tyson and John Flinchbaugh, who was married to their sister Rebecca. In it, it lists Jacob as residing in Clinton County, PA. Also, descendants of Jacob and Elizabeth state they were born in York County, PA before moving to Clinton County, PA. Jacob’s birth year of 1810 fits with the expected age of Jacob’s son. No other male descendant of Henry Tyson is likely to be the father since Jehu moved his family to Indiana County by 1820 and no known Sechrist family moved to that area, so that makes it unlikely Jacob would have married a Sechrist who was born in York County. Henry Tyson Jr. has a son named Jacob, making it unlikely he had another son with that name and Isaac’s estate records do not a list son by the name of Tyson. Also, there were several Sechrist families residing near the area where Jacob Tyson lived, making it very likely he met Elizabeth this way.
The oldest daughter Elizabeth is mentioned in her mother Elizabeth’s will from 1850, and lists her name as Elizabeth Frey, as she was married to Frederick Frey at the time. Also mentioned in her will was her son John, who married Lydia Flinchbaugh, but had already passed away in 1846. Finally, it mentions that she had a son-in-law named John Flinchbaugh, and as discussed on his page, he was married to Rebecca Tyson.
That leaves only two daughters unaccounted for, Nancy and Sarah. They each married a Goodling brother, Peter and Jacob respectively.
Jacob and Elizabeth are the ancestors to many York Countians, as they were the parents of 9 children that reached adulthood and of at least 68 grandchildren that reached adulthood as well. Some of the more well-known descendants of Jacob Tyson & Elizabeth Lehman are Representative George Goodling and his son Representative William (Bill) Goodling, and Louis Appell Jr., who was President and CEO of Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff and well known for his civic involvement and philanthropic endeavors in the city of York, PA.
After Jacob died in 1822, it appears his widow Elizabeth lived on the family farm and that is where she raised her young children, as she is listed as a head of household in Windsor Twp in 1830. By 1840, she is no longer listed as a head of household, and that appears to be due to the fact that the family home and farmstead was turned over to her youngest living son Benjamin. His 1840 census shows a female aged 60-69 living in his household, and the 1850 census which lists all households members lists Elizabeth Tyson, age 75, living with him.
