2. Susanna Sechrist

History and Biography of Susanna Sechrist & Jacob Crow

Susanna Sechrist was the 4th child and 2nd daughter of John Sechrist and Anna Wildberger.  Based upon the information from her families emigration records from when they left Rafz, Switzerland, Susanna was born in 1742.  Susanna didn’t live in Rafz, Switzerland long, as she left her hometown in March 1744 and had arrived in America with her family sometime by 1747, as evidenced by her sister Maria Dorothy’s baptism at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, PA sometime before 1760, Francis married Veronika Feiser.

Sometime in the early 1760’s, Susanna married Jacob Crow/Kroh/Gro.  Susanna and Francis were the parents of seven children.  They were named Frederick, Peter, Martin, John, Michael, Mary, Catharine, Esther, Christina, Elizabeth and Susanna.

Susanna and Jacob moved out to the “western frontier” around 1769 and lived in Greene County, PA.  At that time in history, there were still conflicts with Native Americans and this family lost 4 children in two separate incidents with Native Americans.

In May of 1791, their daughters Catherine, Elizabeth, Susanna, Christina were returning home from a visit to a sickly neighbor when they were attacked by two Indians and one white man named Spicer in what has become known as the Crow Rock Massacre.  The men were hiding behind a big rock and then surprised the girls and attacked them.  Catherine, Elizabeth and Susanna were killed by the attack, while Christina managed to escape, although she had a scar from the attack for the remainder of her life.

Sometime after this occurred, either in 1782 or 1789 according to different sources, their sons Frederick, Martin and John were on a hunting trip along what is now called Crow’s Run in West Virginia.  A group of Native Americans found their camp and opened fire on them.  In the exchange, John was killed.
