3. Herman Miller

Herman Miller, the 3rd son of Herman Miller and Catherine, was born around late 1741 or early 1742, as he was baptized on March 3, 1742 at the Swatara Reformed Church in present day Lebanon County, near the town of Jonestown.  Herman married Barbara, who last name is unknown at the present time.

He owned 150 acres in Hopewell and Shrewsbury Twp, the land he owned is now part of Spring Valley Park.  Herman was one of the founding members of Blymire’s Church in York Township, as several of their children were baptized at that church. Herman passed away sometime in early 1817 as his will was proven on February 21, 1817.  His youngest brother Michael was the executor of his estate.

Herman and Barbara were the parents of at least 10 children, and possibly more.  Recorded deed transactions between Jacob Ness, who purchased Herman’s property from his estate, and several of Herman’s children indicate that 9 children were living at the time Herman passed away.  Herman’s estate file lists 12 individuals who owed him (and therefore his estate) money and in reviewing that list, it contains most of his known children and/or their spouses.

The oldest son of Herman and Barbara was Michael Miller.  This is verified by his PA death record in 1853 which lists that Michael was born in York County, PA and his parents were Herman and Barbara Miller.  Since there was only one couple named Herman and Barbara Miller in York County, Pa at that time, Michael is definitely their son.  Also, Michael named his one son Harmon, which is a variation of the name Herman, and many early records show those names being used interchangably

Next, is their daughter Maria Magdalena.  There is a baptismal record for her birth on January 3, 1767 at Trinity Reformed Church in York, PA that lists her parents as Herman and Barbara.  Maria Magdalena married Jehu Tyson and moved with their family to Brush Valley in Indiana County, PA.  You can refer to his page for the evidence that points to Maria marrying Jehu.

Third child of Herman Barbara was their son Henry Miller.  He was born February 20, 1768 and baptized at Trinity Reformed Church in York, PA.  I have not been able to determine if Henry died in his youth or was one of several Henry Miller’s in York County born around that time.  Henry was not listed as someone owing his father money like the rest of his siblings in his father’s estate file, which may indicate he died in his youth.

Fourth is Herman Miller, born in 1770 and baptized at Blymire’s Church in York Twp.  This Herman likely died in his youth as they named another son Herman in 1786.

The next child of Herman and Barbara is Susanna Miller, who was born in 1771 and was  baptized at Blymire’s Church in York Twp.  Susanna is the only child explicitly listed in her father’s will, and many times when you see that in someone’s will it indicates she might have been single and never married, but it is unclear if she was married or not.

The sixth child of Herman and Barbara was almost certainly Elizabeth Miller.  Elizabeth was married to John Lutz.  The reasons I believe Elizabeth was the daughter of Herman and Barbara is because she named her first born Harmon Lutz.  Herman/Harmon was a very uncommon name during that time period and all the individuals with that name in southern York County in the early 1800’s was connected with Herman Miller.  Also, John Lutz is listed as an individual owing money to Herman Miller in Herman’s estate file, along with Herman’s other children and/or their spouses.

Next is Barbara Miller, born in 1780 according to church records at Blymire’s Church in York Twp.  She married Michael Snyder/Schneider.  There are records of a Barbara Miller marrying Michael Schneider on October 21, 1800 at Trinity Reformed Church in York, PA.  While it could have been a different Barbara Miller, it is more than likely Herman’s daughter due to the fact that Michael Snyder is listed as an individual owing money to Herman Miller in Herman’s estate file, along with Herman’s other children and/or their spouses.  Also, Barbara and Michael named one of their sons Harmon Snyder, which as previously mentioned was not a common first name.

The eighth child of Herman and Barbara was Regina Miller, who was born in 1782 and was  baptized at Blymire’s Church in York Twp.  Regina married Thomas Stiles.  Like with John Lutz and Michael Snyder, Thomas is listed as owning money to his father-in-law Herman in his estate papers.  Also, there is a recorded deed transaction between Jacob Ness, who purchased Herman’s property from his estate, and Regina Stiles, wife of Thomas Stiles in regards to her receiving money owed to her from when Jacob purchased the property.

The ninth child of Herman and Barbara was Harmon Miller, who was born in 1786 and baptized at Trinity Reformed Church in York, PA.  Harmon is listed as owing his father money in the estate records.  Also the recorded deed transaction between Jacob Ness and Harmon Miller indicates that Harmon was lviing in Black Lick Twp, Indiana County, PA in 1839.

The tenth and youngest known child was Jacob Miller.  He was born in 1788 and baptized at Friendensaal’s Church in Springfield Twp.  He is listed as owing his father money in the estate records.  However, I have not been able to determine what happened to him since there are several Jacob Miller’s born around that time in York County, PA.
