3. John Flinchbaugh (1798-1876)

History and Biography of John Flinchbaugh & Rebecca Tyson

John Flinchbaugh is the third son of Frederick Flinchbaugh and Christina Pfister.  According to his baptismal record, he was born April 12, 1798 in York County, PA and was baptized on May 10, 1798 at Blymire’s Church in York Twp, York County, PA.  He married Rebecca Tyson, daughter of Jacob Tyson and Elizabeth Lehman.  Rebecca was born September 24, 1803 in York County, PA.  As mentioned in the page about Frederick Flinchbaugh, the Tyson family lived just to the north of where Frederick owned land, their land was located on the east side of Felton Rd where it intersects with Brownton Rd.

John and Rebecca are the grandparents of Jacob M. Flinchbaugh.  Jacob was elected as a State Representative for the Red Lion/Dallastown area to the PA House of Representatives in 1925, 1927, 1931, 1933, 1935 and 1937.  He is also well-known as a Flinchbaugh family historian, having written the “Early History of the Flinchbaugh Family in York County, Penna” booklet in 1928 that details the history of the Flinchbaugh family in York County, PA.  Many people believe the M. for his middle initial stands for Melchior, possibly because Melchior was the progenitor of the Flinchbaugh’s in York County and Jacob compiled the Flinchbaugh history booklet.  However, his death certificate lists his middle name as Miller, which makes sense since it was very common in those times for children to use their mother’s maiden name for a middle name.
