2. Adam Flinchbaugh (1782-1842)

History and Biography of Adam Flinchbaugh

Adam Flinchbaugh is the fourth son of Martin Flinchbaugh and Barbara Pfister.  He was born June 14, 1782 in York County, PA and baptized August 4, 1782 at Blymire’s Church.  On January 25, 1807, Adam married Catherine Dohm at Trinity Reformed Church in York, York County, PA.  Catherine was born April 1, 1788 in York County, PA.

Adam and Catherine were the parents of at least seven children, as they are mention in Adam’s Orphans Court records after his death in 1842.  The Orphans Court records indicate his sons, from oldest to youngest were Samuel D., Adam and John.  The records indicate his daughters were Sarah (married to Jonathan Geesey), Mary (married to Levi Neff), Catherine (married to Charles Leader) and Elizabeth (a minor).

In 1822, Adam purchased part of what was originally Melchior’s land in York Twp. and later his estate sold that land to his son John Flinchbaugh.

The “Early History of the Flinchbaugh Family in York County, Penna”, written by Jacob M Flinchbaugh in 1928 mentions:

Father Melchior traveled and  settled on a hillside of York Township to a place where he established a home to the west of the village of Arbor and south of Dallastown. The farm later occupied by John Flinchbaugh, who died at the advanced age of ninety-seven, dying some fifteen years ago.

The John Flinchbaugh mentioned as having occupied the farm where Melchior first settled is the John Flinchbaugh that is the son of Adam Flinchbaugh and Catherine Dohm.  The History of York County, Pennsylvania. John Gibson written in 1886 has a sketch of the same John Flinchbaugh where in reference to the house it mentions:

JOHN FLINCHBAUGH (farmer), son of Adam and Catherine (Dohm) Flinchbaugh, was born July 3, 1819, in the old homestead on the farm where Mr. Flinchbaugh now lives and which he owns.

Many people have taken this to mean that John Flinchbaugh lived in the same house that Melchior lived in when he came to York County.  I am not quite sure we can come to that conclusion, just because it says he was born in the old homestead on the farm does it mean it was the original homestead on the farm.  Also, without proof of the age of the house or some other proof, I don’t believe we can take an “Oral History” as proof, especially since those histories often get corrupted throughout the generations.  That is why I believe Jacob M. said John lived on the farm owned by Melchior, but did not say anything about it being the same house.

While it is unknown if John lived in the same house as Melchior, it is known that what Jacob M. wrote was correct, in regards to the fact that John Flinchbaugh (1819-1916) did indeed occupy the same farmland that Melchior originally bought.  To verify this, I looked at the 1911 deed when John sold the property to Oliver Hess.  In that deed, it mentioned John Flinchbaugh acquired the property in 1844 from his fathers estate (Adam 1782-1842).  Adam owned about 275 acres, and John purchased about 117 acres.  I then reviewed the Orphans Court records of Adam’s dad Martin, but Martin’s land was sold to his son Henry.  That means Adam had to puchase his land elsewhere, and in reviewing the Orphans Court records of John Flinchbaugh (1771-1819), it shows in 1822 his estate sold about 300 acres to Adam Flinchbaugh in York and North Hopewell Twp.  At the time of his death in 1819, John also owned two other large tracts of land.  Finally, I reviewed the estate of John Adam Flinchbaugh (1741-1820), and his estate files showed that beginning in 1817, his son John owed him $80 on a yearly basis until 1821, then owed him $133.33 until 1837.  This totals over $2500, which makes it appear that Adam sold his land to his John in 1817.  Finally, there is a deed in 1803 that shows 235 acres was sold from the estate of Melchior to his son Adam in 1788 (deed wasn’t recorded until 1803).

So here is the line of ownership for Melchior’s property that went down to John Flinchbaugh (1819-1916):
  1. Melchior purchased his land in York and North Hopewell Township (sometime in the mid 1760’s).
  2. In 1788, Melchior’s estate sold 235 acres to his son Adam Flinchbaugh(1741-1820)
  3. In 1817 (or sometime around then), Adam sold his land to his only son John (1771-1819)
  4. In 1822, John’s estate sold about 300 acres to Adam Flinchbaugh (1782-1842).  John’s widow Magdalena bought the separate “mansion tract” of over 110 acres that John and Magdalena lived on at the time of his death.
  5. In 1844, Adam’s estate sold about 275 acres to his son John Flinchbaugh, who lived there 67 years until 1911 when he sold the property to Oliver Hess.

Also, the 1860 Shearer’s Map of York County and the 1876 Atlas of York County, by Pomeroy, Whitman and Company show a J. Flinchbaugh living at a house along Arbor Drive just to the northeast of where it intersects with Stine Hill Rd.

In getting back to Adam, as stated earlier, he passed away in 1842 on September 28.  His wife Catherine lived another 13 years, as she passed on away on October 18, 1855.  Both of them are buried at Blymire’s Church in York Twp, York County, PA.
