2. John Craley (1790-1827)

History and Biography of John Craley

John Craley, the second child and oldest son of Christian Craley and his wife Catherine Gohn, was born on April 20, 1790 in York County, PA.  He was baptized on May 24, 1790 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church (then known as Stehli’s Church) in Chanceford Twp, York County, PA.  Sometime around 1810, John married Sarah Ilgis/Ilyis/Ellis.  Based on him being listed next to his father on the 1820 census in Chanceford Twp, it appears John resided either next to very close to where his father owned land.

Unfortunately, John passed away at a relatively young age.  The Orphans Court records for his estate begin in 1827, which indicated he died around that time.  According to his Orphans Court records, he was the father of 6 children.  Their names, from oldest to youngest, are George, Christian, John, Lydia, Anna Maria and Magdalena.  It is unknown what happened to George and Anna Maria after 1827.  Magdalena shows up in the 1850 census living with her mother Sarah, brother John and sister Lydia’s two children, in 1880 she shows up as the spouse of Frederick Shoff and by 1900 she is listed as a widow and living with her nephew Jacob Craley, the census indicates she did not have any children.  This seems likely since she married Frederick sometime between 1860 and 1870, after his first wife Eve Arnold had passed away.  Lydia married George Shoff and had two children, but she passed away between 1847 and 1850.  John and Christian raised their families in Chanceford Twp.

Jacob Craley born January 5, 1849 in York County, PA, died February 6, 1909 in York County, PA and buried at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Chanceford Twp, York County, PA.  He married Mary Ann Stermer born September 2, 1848 in York County, PA, died June 10, 1934 in York County, PA and buried at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Chanceford Twp, York County, PA.
    3. Elizabeth Craley born March 14, 1851 in York County, PA, died January 12, 1924 in York County, PA and buried at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Chanceford Twp, York County, PA.  She married John Ellis born September 15, 1851 in York County, PA, died February 19, 1924 in York County, PA and buried at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Chanceford Twp, York County, PA.
